Qualifications

I believe I have the experience, skills, and goals necessary to be the kind of School Board Member DPS teacher, parents, and students can be proud of.

The Dayton Education Association recently announced that they recommend voting for me for DPS School Board in this election.

I am a teacher

I have a BA and MA in Literature from Wright State University

I have a Ph.D in Writing and Rhetoric from Bowling Green State University (Ohio)

I have been teaching English since 2009 at universities throughout the state and country.

I was also a tutor of Math and English for Dayton primary school students while I went to Wright State.

I am a proud member of the Central State Chapter of the AAUP and I am aware of the importance of strong (teachers) unions

I am a Daytonian

I was born and raised in Cincinnati, but after five years of being in the area while at Wright State, Blair and I knew that Dayton was a place we wanted to return. After completing my doctorate at BGSU, I went to my first full time teaching job in Oklahoma, but worked to get back to Ohio as soon as I could.

I left a Tenure Track Job and turned down another in South Central Ohio to start work as a non-tenure track Assistant Professor at Central State University, in order to work there and to get back to Dayton, where we have lived for the last 4 years.

I am proud to say that I have now live in Dayton for most of my adult life, and I look forward to making Dayton the place where our sons grow up.

I am committed to my community

I believe service to community is one of our most important responsibilities, and I work continually to serve my communities in and around Dayton.

I have been a part of a number of community projects and events to support various groups and organizations in and around Dayton, and I have been a leader in a number of programs in the Dayton Area.

  • * I worked with Dayton Metro Library to lead a writing workshop with writers from the ages of 8 to 68.
  • * I created a local chess club for kids to meet and learn chess which at its peak had nearly 20 kids and parents participating weekly
  • * I am in my second year as a volunteer Parent Ambassador for the Preschool Promise program

I am an empathetic and patient, but persistentlistener and problem solver,  who will work continually to make sure Dayton Public Schools continue to build a community-driven system of support for our parents, teachers, and children.
